How to Make the Brown Color

How to Make Brown by Mixing Other Colors

So you want to know how to make brown by mixing colors? It’s pretty easy, yet, as in most cases the devil lies in the details.

The Necessary Basics

We won’t dive too deep into the color theory (there are several of them, by the way). You should only know we can put colors into different groups.

Primary colors are the ones that are (in theory) made of one component only. Yellow is made of yellow and nothing else, for instance.

The primary colors are just three: red, yellow, and blue.

Secondary colors are made by mixing two primary colors. Orange, for example, is made of red and yellow. Every child learns that after first painting classes in school. Or in kindergarten. Or even before.

There are only three secondary colors: orange, purple, and green.

Orange is made of red and yellow, purple from red and blue, and green from yellow and blue.

We also have tertiary colors. They can be made by mixing primary colors only or we can make them from a combination of primary and secondary colors. Depending on the ratio of each component in the mixture, results can vary a lot.

But in our case we only want to know how the brown color is made, right?

As you already guessed, brown is the best example of tertiary colors.

You can make it by mixing one of the primary colors with its so-called complementary color (the complementary color of each primary color is made by mixing the other two primary colors).

This means we have three pairs of primary colors with their complementary colors.

You can clearly see them in the color wheel.

yellow – purple

red – green

blue – orange

Voila! By making a mixture of each pair above you will get the color brown!

Can You Make Brown from Primary Colors Only?

Indeed! You just need to use all three of them:

And that’s about all for today. Have a brownie;)
